Overview

The Volkswagen Passat has been around since the early 1990s, and over the years, it has continued to hold a spot on midsized sedan buyers' short lists. With its great looks and desirable standard features, it's a fine option for anyone looking for a stylish vehicle that won't strain their finances. For model year '23, adaptive cruise control has been made standard, and all Passats also get VW's Carefree Coverage. This maintenance plan includes 2 years/20,000 miles of complimentary scheduled service for oil changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections, along with 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance, and a 4-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty.

Trims and Powertrain

The '23 Passat is a front-wheel-drive midsized four-door that's available in S, SE, and R-Line trim levels (the SEL trim level has been dropped for this model year). Under the hood is a turbocharged 174 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. According to EPA listings, each trim achieves 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Comfort and Convenience

All trims receive several notable features. The entry-level S has automatic LED headlights, heated power-operated side mirrors with position memory, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a rearview camera, and a front USB data port. The SE adds a sunroof, rain-sensing windshield wipers, keyless entry and ignition, remote start, a power-adjustable driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, leatherette upholstery, and two rear USB charging ports. The R-Line gets sportier bodywork, an adaptive front lighting system, ambient interior lighting, and a trim-specific front bumper, badges, and door sill protectors.

Safety and Technology

Each of the '23 Passat trims is issued a slate of driver-assist features. In the S, this includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The SEL gets lane keeping assist, and the R-Line is given automatic high beams. All '23 Passats get an Intelligent Crash Response System that not only deploys the airbags in the event of a significant collision but will automatically turn off the fuel pump, unlock the doors, and activate the hazard lights. An Automatic Post-Collision Braking System is also issued. It will bring the Passat to a stop or after a collision to reduce the chance of a secondary impact.

No matter which trim you choose, you'll find it comes with an abundance of premium technology features. The S and SE have an infotainment system with a 6.3-inch touchscreen, HD and satellite radio (SiriusXM), a six-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, and VW Car-Net remote services. The fully loaded R-Line adds integrated navigation and a top-shelf Fender audio system.

Maintenance Schedule

10,000-Mile Intervals

As your Passat gets close to this point, it's time to schedule your first engine oil and filter change. The factory-trained Volkswagen technicians will also do a visual inspection of your vehicle's major components to check for any signs of a developing issue. This level of scheduled maintenance will be repeated for each 10,000 miles your Passat reaches, with a few more services added at certain odometer milestones (as outlined below).

20,000-, 40,000-, and 60,000-Mile Intervals
At each interval of 20,000 miles, your VW Passat should get a more thorough inspection (tires, brakes and their components, battery, exhaust system, suspension, and coolant system). There will likely be a few replacements taking place here as well, including the air and dust/pollen filters. The VW technician may take the Passat out for a road test during these service visits, especially if you report any new sounds or other signs of an issue.

80,000-Mile Intervals

Although this milestone is far in the future of your Passat, it's good to note that at 80,000 miles it may need its spark plugs replaced along with a change of the transmission fluid. By keeping up with the regular interval schedule, you'll give your Passat what it needs for many years of adventures.
